• Ultrasound
  • Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field therapy
  • Phototherapy (red light, blue light and laser)

To compliment any rehabilitation plan I have three modalities at my disposal. They all do different things, and will only be used when necessary. I am fully trained to use all three.

Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound, different to diagnostic ultrasound, is used a lot in the Equine Physio world. It well tested and when used by a trained professional, has many benefits. It works at a cellular level by giving out sound waves that permeate the subcutaneous tissue and have a reach of 5 to 7cm (much further than manual massage can be effective!).

Ultrasound has a thermal effect by increasing blood flow and a non-thermal effect by stimulating cell activity.

I use ultrasound to treat the following conditions:

  • Muscle Spasm
  • Tendon and ligament issues
  • Scar tissue/Proud flesh
  • Removal of exudate (swelling an bruising)
  • Analgesia (pain reduction)

Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF)

PEMF, unlike the popular static magnets, works from a battery operated unit, meaning it can create polarity. Like Ultrasound, it increases blood flow, membrane permeability and oxygen uptake.

It also has excellent results when used in fracture repair and pain relief.

I use PEMF to treat the following conditions:

  • Chronic pain
  • Non-union fractures
  • Muscle spasm
  • Soft tissue repair

Phototherapy

The unit that we use for treatment works in three settings; visible red light, blue light and infrared. This is used for skin conditions and to relax the patient pre-treatment . It works by changing the skin’s immune system, reducing inflammation, and a removal of abnormal cells. The blue light works on the proliferation of bacteria and is very useful for wound care and mudfever.

I use phototherapy to treat the following conditions:

  • Proud flesh
  • Scar tissue and breakdown of adhesions
  • Post-operative care
  • Collagen repair
